“Hurricane Irma Recovery – Scam Alert”

 

As we continue to recover from Hurricane Irma please remember that “Scammers” are still active throughout the State of Florida trying to prey on those that have endured so much. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to be prepared and remain vigilant.  Here are some tips to safeguard against fraud:

 

Ask to see identification:  All Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) representatives are required to carry an identification badge with a photograph.  A FEMA shirt or jacket is not proof of identity. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with anyone you encounter, contact your local Law Enforcement agency immediately.

 

Safeguard your FEMA registration number:  This number is the key to your application information.  Please safeguard it and do not share it with others.

 

Safeguard personal information: No State or Federal Government disaster assistance agency will call you to ask for your financial account information. Unless you place a call to a verified agency yourself, you should not provide personal information over the phone.

 

Federal Inspectors: FEMA Inspectors verify damages.  They do not involve themselves in any aspect of the repair, nor do they recommend Contractors.

 

Beware of people going door to door:  People knocking on doors at damaged homes or phoning homeowners claiming to be building contractors may be con artists, especially if they ask for personal information or solicit money.

 

The toll free FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline number is 866-720-5721. If you suspect fraud, please call this number!

Crisis Cleanup Sunday

Register locally for ‘crisis cleanup’

 

October 13, 2017 – Residents still in need of Hurricane Irma crisis cleanup assistance after Sunday should call Flagler Volunteer Services at 386-597-2950.

 

The current toll-free crisis cleanup national hotline – 800-451-1954 – goes offline on Sunday.

 

“After Sunday, residents can call Flagler Volunteer Services,” said Laura Nelson, senior mitigation planner. “Residents can still get their requests into the Crisis Cleanup Hotline before Sunday to simplify the process.”

 

The Crisis Cleanup hotline is a way to connect survivors with volunteers who can help.

 

“For those agencies providing relief services, they can continue to use the hotline to help connect with survivors,” said Sally Sherman, interim public safety manager. “Anyone needing assistance should reach out as soon as possible.”

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

“National Prescription Drug Take Back Day”

 

The front lobby of the Flagler Beach Police Department will be open on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in support of “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day”.  The Police Department is located at 204 South Flagler Avenue, one (1) block south of SR100 on the east side of the Moody/SR100 Bridge.

 

This one (1) day event will provide residents and/or visitors with a no cost, anonymous collection of unwanted and/or expired medicines and this initiative is a collaboration between your local Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).   This one (1) day event supplements our ongoing efforts to safely collect and dispose of prescription medications with our Drug Collection Unit; which is located within the Police Department’s lobby.

 

Please help protect our children, families and environment by cleaning out your medicine cabinets and properly disposing of your unwanted and/or expired medicines.  Medicines in the home are a leading cause of accidental poisoning and flushed or trashed medicines can end up polluting our water sources.  Rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high; over half of teens abusing medicines get them from a family member or friend, including the home medicine cabinet, and often without their knowledge.

 

Chief Doughney stated “Our Drug Collection Unit, which was donated by CVS Pharmacy, is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Our Department will be open on Saturday, October 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to collect any unwanted prescription medications and we’ll continue to work with DEA to dispose of drugs safely”.

Gratis Vouchers to Reward Youth

“Police & Local 7-11 Partner for Gratis Vouchers to Reward Youth”

                                                                                                 

The Flagler Beach Police Department and the local beachside 7-eleven store have partnered to reward the youth of our community when they display good moral character, citizenship and community spirit.

Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, October 10, 2017, Flagler Beach Police Officers will be issuing “Gratis” vouchers that when presented to a child will allow them to receive a free ¼ lb. hot dog, a free taquito and a free single serve 7-select chips.  Two-hundred (200) “Gratis” vouchers will be distributed and are valid until December 31, 2017.

“It costs nothing to be nice to others and the definition of “Gratis” means without charge; free. This partnership will help show our children that being a good citizen, making good decisions and being friendly literally pays off” said Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney. Doughney continued by stating “Partnering with our local 7-11 to reward and reinforce the positive behavior of our kids is a great idea and it’s something we’re proud to support”.

 

The Flagler Beach Police Department is extending the “Gratis” vouchers to parents, business owners and neighbors in our community who serve as “eye witnesses” and would like to help acknowledge a child’s community spirit and good will.

Last Week of Debris Collection

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS LAST WEEK OF DEBRIS COLLECTION

 

Debris from Hurricane Irma will continue to be picked up until the end of this week.  ALL debris, both Vegetative and Construction & Demolition, must be placed in separate piles in the Right-of-Way by the dates below, based on geographic sector:

  • Thursday, October 12: Barrier Island North of SR100
  • Friday, October 13: West of the Intracoastal Waterway
  • Saturday, October 14: Barrier Island South of SR100

YARD WASTE.  Place un-bagged yard waste in the right-of-way next to the road for removal.  Yard waste consists of the following: branches, leaves, trees limbs, underbrush, etc.  Do not mix anything in it: no recyclables, no garbage.

The importance of separating yard waste and construction debris cannot be understated!

CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION (C&D)

This includes any flooring (tile, wood, laminate, carpeting and padding); furniture, mattresses, appliances, etc. that you had to remove from your home.  It also includes TVs and computers.

NO TIRES!!!  If there are tires in your pile, none of the pile will be picked up.

 

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHHW)

The City cannot legally handle your household hazardous waste.  Residents may take it to the County Landfill FREE OF CHARGE.  The landfill is at 1700 Old Kings Road, 1.8 miles south of SR 100.  They are open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3:30 PM.  Phone:  (386) 517-2075.

HHHW includes items such as paint cans (oil and water based), aerosol containers, lubricants, cleaners, oils, solvents, devices with mercury, rechargeable batteries, adhesives, pool maintenance chemicals, etc.

Up to 10 tires will be accepted, but they CANNOT be on rims.  Place spill-able items inside an open cardboard or plastic box and secure them so they don’t tip over.  Electronics such as TVs and computers may be placed with the C&D pile.

 

Crowder Gulf: Disaster Recover & Relief has been contracted by the City to pick up yard waste and construction debris.  The removal of yard waste and construction debris continues to be a high priority.  The first pass throughout the City will be completed today and the second pass will begin tomorrow, October 10th.  The second pass is expected to be completed on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

The City’s Sanitation Department will continue to be responsible for removal of household garbage and recyclables, and will follow the schedule established prior to the storm.

The following information is being provided to our residents and the local media in reference to our continuing efforts to remove debris created by Hurricane Irma.

Representatives from the Small Business Administration (SBA) invite the residents and property owners to attend an Open House on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 between the hours of 9:30 A.M until 4:30 P.M. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall.

This Open House is an effort to assist residents and property owners to apply for individual disaster low interest loans.  The SBA representatives will guide those who attend through the application process.

If you plan to attend, please make sure that you have registered with FEMA prior to Wednesday.  That is a necessary first step.

Bring your bank’s routing number and, if possible, your insurance and other relevant papers.

Laptops will be available on site, for you to register and apply for the low interest rate loans.

The Open House will be held between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2017
